Sub-Zero Ice Maker Output Dropping in Wayland: Water, Fill or Freeze?
Ice output that faded over a season is usually demand, supply pressure or a lapsed filter rather than a failing appliance. Measure a full twenty-four hours before diagnosing, then walk the water route backwards from the fill valve to the shut-off.
Almost nobody rings about ice on the morning it fails, because it seldom fails on a morning. It fades. The bin used to be brimming overnight and now it is two-thirds; the cubes are a shade smaller than they were; somebody starts picking up bags before people come over. By the time it is irritating enough to act on, no one in the house can say when the slide began or how much ice there used to be — and that missing baseline is the first thing to put right.
Shape, clarity, size: three separate signals
Describe the decline before diagnosing it. Empty the bin to the bottom, write down the time, and look again twenty-four hours later. You now hold a real number to set against the next one. Then sort what you scooped out by shape, by clarity and by size, because those three properties are answering three unrelated questions.
Shape first. A cube with a dip or a cavity in it says that the mould received less water than the cycle had allowed for; the walls froze, the middle never filled in. Clarity is a separate matter entirely, and a cloudy centre is neither dirt nor a hygiene problem — as the ice front advances, dissolved air and dissolved minerals are driven inward and finish up locked in the last of the water to solidify. Size is the third question: cubes that are clear, separate and merely small point at the water side. And if they arrive loose and later knit into one mass in the bin, that is a fourth signal about timing and turnover rather than about cold.
Season matters here, which is why the slide so often reads as a Wayland problem rather than a machine problem. Output is quoted per twenty-four hours, and it drops when the door is opened constantly or the compartment is packed until air cannot move. A Cochituate house in July with children in and out all day is asking far more of the same appliance than the same kitchen asked of it in March. None of that is a fault. It is demand and installation, and it deserves ruling out before parts are discussed.
Supply line, valve and pressure
If the fall-off is real once demand is accounted for, the water route is the next thing to walk, and it is best walked backwards from the appliance rather than forwards from the tap. Most gradual declines have a mechanical cause somewhere along that route that has been getting slowly worse.
The shut-off is the usual culprit and the least suspected, because closing it is somebody else’s memory. Kitchens in these towns have been worked on repeatedly — a rear addition in the nineties, a re-fit ten years later — and a stop left three-quarters closed after the last visit will still allow a fill, just a poor one. A saddle valve tapped into old pipe behind a cabinet narrows over time as sediment collects around the piercing, which is exactly the profile of a fault that creeps rather than one that arrives.
Then there is the run itself. In a house on private water rather than town supply, seasonal pressure varies more than people expect, and a marginal restriction that coped in winter stops coping when the irrigation is running. Look for tubing squeezed against a cabinet rail or copper doubled over behind a built-in that was pushed back too far. Low pressure at the inlet gives the valve less water in the fixed seconds it is open, and short fills are the direct cause of the dished cube you started with.
When was it last changed?
Nobody remembers, which is the honest answer in most houses, and it matters more than it sounds. A cartridge nearing the end of its service restricts flow well before anything about the water tastes different, so the household’s own quality control never triggers. The ice deteriorates for months while the drinking water stays perfectly acceptable.
Aftermarket cartridges add a second variable. Filtration and flow are not the same specification, and a cheap replacement that cleans the water adequately while passing it grudgingly will reproduce the small, hollow cube precisely. If the cubes recover after fitting a fresh cartridge, that settles it. If they recover on bypass but not with the new cartridge in place, the replacement is the problem rather than the fault.
Bypass proves less than people assume in the other direction, though. No improvement with the filter out of circuit narrows the field by exactly one item; it does not clear the water side. For the interval itself, use the figure in your own model’s use and care guide rather than a general rule, and treat a heavy-use household as reaching it sooner.
Cubes that form and never leave the mould
Harvest is the second half of every cycle, and it is worth naming because most people have never had cause to. The mould fills, the water freezes, and then the machine warms the mould just enough for the finished cubes to release and be swept into the bin. Freezing well and releasing well are different competencies.
When cubes arrive fused, ask about turnover before assuming a fault. Ice left undisturbed for a week or two will bond to itself, so a house that empties out for a Cape weekend or a school holiday comes back to a slab that means nothing. Where the bin is worked hard and the ice still knits together, timing is the suspect: a batch dropping onto one that has not settled, or a cycle repeating early.
Without tools you can watch three things. Does the ejector sweep across and clear the mould, or stall part-way? Does the sensing arm move freely when nudged, or is a stray cube holding it up? What is worth calling about
Stop the investigation for any of three things: water on the floor, a damp fitting anywhere along the line, or a compartment drifting off its set temperature. Bad ice can wait a week. Those cannot, and in an addition built over a crawl space the damage is out of sight until it is expensive.
What a visit adds is measurement. How much water actually enters the mould on a fill, what pressure is present at the inlet, how long the cycle is taking against how long it should, whether the control is even commanding a fill — none of that is visible from the kitchen, and all of it is what separates a restricted supply from a failing valve from a control fault. Guessing between those three by buying parts is how a small job turns into three small jobs.

Why does output drop in summer?
Because the appliance is asked for more at the same time as conditions get worse. Production is rated over a twenty-four-hour period, and it falls when the door is opened constantly or the compartment is loaded so tightly that air cannot move around the mould. Why is my ice cloudy when the tap water is clear?
Because liquid water and ice handle their dissolved content differently. Air and minerals sit invisibly in solution in the glass, but freezing drives them out of the forming ice, and they finish up concentrated in the centre — the part that solidifies last. Clear water at the tap and a white middle in the cube are two entirely compatible observations, and neither indicates dirt.
How often should the water filter be changed?
Follow the figure in the use and care guide for your own series; broad advice is unreliable here because models differ and so does consumption. The more useful test is behavioural. A cartridge chokes flow well before it alters taste, so if the cubes have been shrinking and nobody can date the last replacement, fit a new one and watch what the next day's output does.
