What we repair · Wayland, MA

Freezer Repair

Freezer columns, freezer drawers and the freezer half of a built-in pair. Defrost cycles, drain paths, drawer runners and compressor behaviour, checked on the appliance rather than inferred from the symptom.

Freezer column standing open with its interior lit white, glass shelves and clear drawers visible, hand tools on the floorboards in front

In the caller's words

How it usually gets described

  1. Frozen food softening while the panel still reads the set temperature
  2. A drawer that will not close flush because ice has built up on the runner
  3. Water dripping into the drawer below from a blocked drain
  4. The unit running continuously after finishing a defrost

On the visit

What gets measured

  • A full defrost cycle watched through, start to finish
  • Defrost heater and terminating thermostat under load
  • Drain heater and the path out of the cabinet
  • Drawer runner travel and where the ice is re-forming
  • Compressor behaviour after the cycle completes

How a call runs

Three stages, in this order

  1. First

The model plate, and what it is doing

The plate lives inside the fresh food compartment on most built-ins, on the upper left wall. That number plus a plain description of the fault settles which platform, which sealed system and which parts ride out on the van.

  2. Second

    Readings taken at the cabinet

Compartment temperatures against the set point, evaporator and condenser behaviour, fan draw, drain path, door seal and hinge alignment. What the display claims is a data point, not a diagnosis.

  3. Third

A number before anything is opened

Parts and labour quoted as one figure, and an honest answer about whether the repair is worth doing at all. Nothing gets dismantled on the strength of a guess.

What it costs

One fixed figure, and a range for the rest

$95 flat service call

It covers the visit and the full diagnosis, and it comes off the bill in full if you approve the repair. Everything beyond it is quoted before anything is dismantled.

Typical completed repairs, parts and labour together. The band your call lands in is settled by the diagnosis, not by the phone.
Door gasket or seal replacement $280 – $750
Evaporator or condenser fan motor $310 – $650
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $280 – $660
Ice maker, water valve or supply line $300 – $690
Electronic control board $520 – $940
Compressor or sealed-system repair $990 – $2,170

For comparison, replacing a comparable built-in runs $7,920 to $19,710 for the appliance alone, before delivery, fitting or panel work. That gap is why most of these repairs are still worth doing.

  • The column ran non stop after every defrost. Drain line iced solid, heater cycling against it. He steamed it clear and fitted a new clip.

  • Split level off Cochituate, February, and bitterly cold on the garage side of the kitchen where the unit sits. Frozen food was softening although the panel still read correct. A failed thermistor. He swapped it, checked the result against his own probe, and was gone inside the hour.

  • The drawer would not shut flush because ice had built along the runner. He took the basket out, thawed it back rather than chipping at it, changed the worn runner and mopped the water off the floor.
