Wine Storage Repair

Dual-zone and single-zone Sub-Zero wine cabinets, undercounter and full height. Zone drift, door seals and glass condensation, rack lighting, fan noise and post-outage behaviour.

In the caller's words

How it usually gets described

  1. The upper zone holding while the lower zone drifts warm
  2. Condensation forming on the inside face of the glass
  3. Rack lighting flickering in time with the compressor
  4. An alarm left sounding after a power cut that will not reset

On the visit

What gets measured

  • Both zones logged against their set points over a full cycle
  • Zone damper and fan behaviour, upper against lower
  • Door seal and glass pack, and where the condensation is forming
  • Rack lighting circuit and its behaviour under compressor start
  • Control response after a power interruption

How a call runs

Three stages, in this order

  1. First

The model plate, and what it is doing

The plate lives inside the fresh food compartment on most built-ins, on the upper left wall. That number plus a plain description of the fault settles which platform, which sealed system and which parts ride out on the van.

  2. Second

    Readings taken at the cabinet

Compartment temperatures against the set point, evaporator and condenser behaviour, fan draw, drain path, door seal and hinge alignment. What the display claims is a data point, not a diagnosis.

  3. Third

A number before anything is opened

Parts and labour quoted as one figure, and an honest answer about whether the repair is worth doing at all. Nothing gets dismantled on the strength of a guess.

What it costs

One fixed figure, and a range for the rest

$95 flat service call

It covers the visit and the full diagnosis, and it comes off the bill in full if you approve the repair. Everything beyond it is quoted before anything is dismantled.

Typical completed repairs, parts and labour together. The band your call lands in is settled by the diagnosis, not by the phone.
Door gasket or seal replacement $280 – $750
Evaporator or condenser fan motor $310 – $650
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $280 – $660
Ice maker, water valve or supply line $300 – $690
Electronic control board $520 – $940
Compressor or sealed-system repair $990 – $2,170

For comparison, replacing a comparable built-in runs $7,920 to $19,710 for the appliance alone, before delivery, fitting or panel work. That gap is why most of these repairs are still worth doing.

  • The full height wine cabinet had got noisy and was running warm at the top. A matted condenser, and a fan wheel out of balance badly enough to hum through the wall. He cleaned it right through, changed the wheel, and vacuumed up the dust rather than leaving it.

  • Condensation formed on the inside face of the glass every humid afternoon. He fitted a new door seal and repaired the anti sweat heater circuit. Two more weeks of August and the glass has stayed dry.

  • An alarm was left sounding after a power cut and nothing I tried would clear it, including pulling the breaker. He found the control latched on a stale fault and a sensor lead gone green at the plug. Cleaned up, reterminated and reset, and it has been silent since.
