Before calling for service, try these troubleshooting steps if your refrigerator isn't cooling properly.

Check the Basics First

  1. Verify power: Is the light on when you open the door? Check the outlet.
  1. Check temperature settings: Ensure they haven't been accidentally changed.
  1. Listen for the compressor: You should hear a low hum. No sound may indicate a problem.
  1. Feel for air flow: Put your hand near vents inside - you should feel cool air.

Common Causes You Can Fix

Dirty Condenser Coils Location varies by model (bottom front, back, or top). Clean with a brush or vacuum. This is the #1 cause of cooling problems.

Blocked Vents Food items blocking air circulation vents inside the refrigerator. Rearrange items to allow airflow.

Door Not Sealing Check that doors close completely and gaskets aren't damaged. The dollar bill test: close the door on a bill - it should resist pulling out.

Overstuffed Too much food blocks air circulation. Remove some items temporarily.
