Ice Maker Not Making Ice: Troubleshooting Guide

Updated July 9, 2024
Intermediate

If your ice maker has stopped producing ice, work through these checks before calling for service.

Quick Checks

  1. Is it turned on? Look for a switch, arm, or control setting.
  1. Is the bin full? Many ice makers stop when the bin is full.
  1. Is the water supply connected? Check the valve behind or under the refrigerator.
  1. Is the freezer cold enough? Should be 0°F or below.

Common Causes

Frozen Water Line In cold weather or if the freezer is too cold, the water line can freeze. Thaw carefully with a hair dryer on low.

Clogged Water Filter A restricted filter reduces water flow. Replace if overdue (typically every 6 months).

Water Inlet Valve If you hear a buzz but no water flows, the valve may be faulty. This requires service.

Ice Maker Mechanism If the motor doesn't run at all, the ice maker module may need replacement.

Testing Water Supply

  1. Locate the water shut-off valve
  2. Verify it's fully open
  3. Check for kinks in the water line
  4. Listen for water filling when ice cycle runs
