Your Sub-Zero refrigerator represents a significant investment in your kitchen. With proper maintenance, these premium appliances can last 20 years or more. Here's what every Sub-Zero owner should know about keeping their unit in top condition.

Condenser Coil Cleaning

The condenser coils are the heart of your refrigerator's cooling system. Located either behind the front grille or at the back of the unit, these coils release heat from the refrigeration cycle. When dust and debris accumulate, the compressor works harder, reducing efficiency and lifespan.

Clean your condenser coils every 6-12 months. Use a coil brush or vacuum with a brush attachment. For homes with pets, consider cleaning quarterly.

Door Seal Inspection

The door gaskets create an airtight seal that keeps cold air inside. Over time, these seals can become brittle, cracked, or lose their magnetic grip. Test your seals by closing the door on a dollar bill - if it slides out easily, the seal needs attention.

Clean gaskets monthly with mild soap and water. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to keep them supple, especially important during New England's dry winter months.

Water Filter Replacement

Sub-Zero recommends replacing water filters every 6-12 months, depending on usage and water quality. In Massachusetts, our hard water can clog filters faster. A clogged filter affects ice production, water taste, and can strain the system.

Temperature Settings

Optimal temperatures are 38°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. Avoid adjusting temperatures frequently, as this stresses the system. If you notice temperature fluctuations, check door seals and condenser coils before adjusting settings.

When to Call a Professional

Some maintenance tasks require expert attention. Annual professional service includes checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, and calibrating thermostats. Our technicians also identify potential problems before they become costly repairs.
