Choosing the Right Range Hood CFM for Your Kitchen

Understanding ventilation requirements for different cooking setups.

Range hood CFM (cubic feet per minute) determines how effectively cooking fumes are removed. Getting this right matters for air quality and kitchen comfort.

CFM Guidelines

Gas Cooktops: Multiply total BTUs by 100, then divide by 100. A 60,000 BTU range needs at least 600 CFM.

Electric/Induction: 300-400 CFM is typically adequate for standard cooking.

Professional Ranges: Match or exceed manufacturer recommendations, often 900-1200 CFM.

Other Factors

Hood Size: Should extend at least 3 inches beyond the cooktop on each side. Larger is better.

Mounting Height: 24-30 inches above gas cooktops, 24-28 inches above electric. Higher mounting reduces effectiveness.

Duct Size: CFM potential depends on duct diameter. 6-inch ducts support up to 400 CFM; 8-inch supports more.

Duct Length: Longer runs and more elbows reduce effective CFM.

Make-Up Air Requirements

High-CFM hoods can depressurize your home, causing backdrafting from water heaters and fireplaces. Homes with tight construction may need make-up air systems for hoods over 400 CFM.

Noise Considerations

Higher CFM often means more noise. Quality hoods manage this better. Remote blowers, mounted outside, dramatically reduce kitchen noise.

Our Recommendations

Don't undersize ventilation. The modest extra cost of adequate CFM pays dividends in air quality and cooking comfort. When in doubt, go larger.
